Ovenden Methodist Church and Sunday School SE02 NE 4/405II GV2 1859 chapel still with neoclassical detailing. Sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings.Low pitched pediment gabled front with moulded coping. 3 bays articulated by coupled pilaster strips, the outer quoin pilaster surmounted above blocking courses, by anthemiondies. The recessed wall face of centre bay is carried up and arched into the gable. The flanking bays also have shallow panels with corbelled return to the wall plane of the,gable. They contain vertically grouped coupled round headed windows with cap impostsand keystones, linking panel between ground and 1st floors. The centr bay has similar but single arched window above doorway with projecting cornice on console brackets. These details are sympathetically and effectively picked up in the large c1900 sundayschool extension to the right of same construction: pilaster articulation carried throughas is window type with pairs above similar doorways in flanking bays, here with sidelights. The centrepiece with pediment-gable is carried higher with 2 pairs of overarchedwindows to 1st floor above large semicircular spaced voussoirs archway screening set back ground floor windows and basement. Large hall with roof and clerestory carried onquatrefoil pierced elliptical girder-trusses. Prominent roadside site. Listing NGR: SE0815927357
