Full description:
House and attached stables. Mid C18. By John Carr for John Lea (Kendall, p113). Coursed squared stone and ashlar, stone slate roofs. Main house 2 storeys and attic, 5 bays with 2-storey, 9-bay service and stable range set back on left, rear range added to right part of this range. Main house: symmetrical ashlar facade. Plinth, cill bands, modillion cornice and pediment. Flight of steps up to 6-panel double door with 3-pane overlight in architrave with pulvinated frieze, cornice and triangular pediment, all in arched recess. Sash windows in architraves with pulvinated friezes, on ground floor with alternatively triangular and segmental pediments, on 1st floor with cornices. 6-pane sash in plain surround to pediment. Corniced end stacks. Wing on left: raised ashlar quoins. Gabled central bay has keyed elliptical carriage-arch with ashlar pilasters, imposts and voussoirs; keyed Venetian window above; table dentil cornice, blind oval gable window, dentil pediment with weather-vane. Bays to right: 3 plain stone surround doorways, the 2 to left now with windows, each with a keyed Venetian window to left; 4 similar windows above. Bays to left: tall, round arched keyed doorway on right; 2 plain doorways, one with mounting block, and 3 keyed Venetian windows; 4 similar windows above. Tabled dentil cornice. Hipped roof. 4 corniced ridge stacks. Rear: house: central doorway under tall keyed, arched stair window. Windows mostly sashes with glazing bars in stone surrounds; moulded gutter brackets. Left return, house: blocked central doorway with rusticated surround and dentil cornice; Diocletian gable window. Right return, house: plinth, ground floor cill band, eaves band forming pediment. Sashes with glazing bars in stone surrounds; Diocletian gable window. Interior: house: contemporary architraves, panelled doors and shutters, cornices and fireplaces throughout. Right front room has acorn friezes to architraves, 1913 painting on doors, delf-tiles in fireplace and mirror above it with elaborate surround. Cantilevered stone stair with iron balusters plain and decoratively-scrolled standards and ramped wooden handrail. 1st floor stair hall has moulded panelling, leaf dentil cornice and original moulded plaster ceiling said to be by the York School of plasters. Elaborate doorways to left and right with Ionic columns, classical cornices and moulded round arches flank plainer arch with pulvinated frieze and festoons above. Full-height back stairs have good turned balusters and moulded handrail. Stables: remains of stalls with managers probably original. The panelling in the stair hall and both stairs are almost identical to those at White Windows Cheshire Home (q.v.), 1768 by Carr for John Priestley, Lea's son-in-law.
