Full description:
Lock c1779. Chamber wing walls built of large ashlar blocks. Double timber gates and timber balance beams at each end. One top gate fitted with handspike-operated paddle gear the other with manually operated hydraulic paddle gear, associated pair of handspike-operated ground paddles. Tail gates fitted with manually operated rack and pinion paddle gear. Three stone set quadrants beneath balance beams. Forms part of a flight of three locks which replaced an earlier staircase built in 1767. A rare surviving example of the unique Calder and Hebble handspike-operated locks. Has group value with adjacent lock, cottage and bridge(q.v.).
