Full description:
House, formerly parish workhouse dated 1827. Hammer dressed stone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys. 2 cells each with flat faced mullioned windows of 2 wide lights and 2 square windows over to 1st floor, (all have altered glazing), and doorways with monolithic jambs (one blocked). The central doorway has a plaque over inscribed:
"This Building was Erected A:D 1827, by a,
Committee with the money arising from the,
coal in the White Birch Farm in Northowram,
of which the interest that arises therefrom,
is to be distributed to such poor people of,
Barkisland as have no Parochial Relief".
Stone gutter brackets and 2 stacks to the ridge. The modern buildings attached to either end are excluded from the item.
The interior retains a room panelled in pine which is said to have been the Council meeting room formerly.
