Full description:
Lodge and gate piers. 1855. Picturesque. Hammer-dressed stone, ashlar, slate roof. The lodge is 'L' shaped with one wing comprising a large bay window whose corners are cut back to quadrants of 3 lights, flanking a central window with similar moulded jambs and transom. This wing, that to road, and the porch in the angle, all have steep and heavy gables with spike dropped finials and extremely florid barge boards. The porch is supported on 2 wooden columns of differing design, carrying a lintel with raised and gilded Gothic lettering: 'COELI CERTA MERCES. AD 1855'. (The reward of Heaven is certain?) The roof, which is stone ridged, has slates of fish scale and lozenge patterns. Prominent central stack. Attached gate piers are square in section with sunk panels, cornice and pyramidal finial of which the surface is decoratively chased. Short sections of adjoining wall have ornamental pierced balustrade of Elizabethan character.
