Description: Castle Farmhouse, Carr Hall Lane

Address: Carr Hall Castle Shaw Lane Holywell Green Halifax West Yorkshire HX4 9DH

Grade: II

Group detail: Carr Hall Lane

Full description:
Substantial Victorian mock Gothic castle with turret, towers and battlements, gatehouse and stable block. Mid C19. Dressed stone and rubblestone, stone slate roofs. Front facade reads from right: 3-storey square embattled tower with 2 arch-headed windows and lancets. Main 2-storey range has 3 large arch-headed windows with 4 slightly shorter windows over, all with rusticated sills. String course continues round 3-storey turret with false staircase lancets next to 5-storey tower with lancets on each floor. Over entrance to rear courtyard is 3-storey tower with lancets and machicolation; all are embattled. To left a stable block with rusticated battlements and arch-headed doorways and windows to stalls for shire horses. An embattled tower with machicolation balances the facade at the end. Rear forms intimate courtyard with outbuildings. Built by the Shaw family, millowners of Holywell Green and of remarkable similarity to the towers in Shaw Park (q.v.). It housed the bailiff who bred the shire horses for Brookroyd Mills and was latterly known as Redman's, the name of the bailiff to the Shaw Estate.
