Full description:
House, early C17 with later alterations. Large finely dressed coursed stone with stone slate roof and coped gables. There is a datestone reading '1606' at the apex of the gable of the west wing. Single-aisled hall plan with east and west wings, flush at the front but projecting at the rear. There is a continuous weathered plinth running round the building. The south front has a single storey porch with cambered headed entrance over, which is an outward facing gable. This shelters the main door which opens into the south-west corner of the hall. The west wing has a double chamfered mullioned window of 4 lights and a 2-light window to ground floor, mullions removed. With a 4-light double chamfered mullioned window above; both having hoodmoulds with simple square returns. The hall has a 5-light double chamfered mullioned window with cavetto moulded mullions and a 2-light fire window. The wall between the two windows has been broken through with an C18 flat faced single mullioned window giving the impression of a range of 8 lights with a hoodmould over with straight return. Above are two 3-light chamfered mullioned windows, one with mullions removed, and between these a later 3-light flat faced mullioned window one mullion removed. The east wing has a double chamfered mullioned window of 4 lights with cavetto mullions and the same above with 2 mullions removed. The left hand return wall of the west wing has double chamfered mullioned windows of 2 lights and 4 lights with a 6-light window above, one mullion removed. There is also a lateral internal stack. A latter outshut to north gable backs on to what was probably the kitchen which has a a fire-window of 2-lights, and its own external door in the east wall. Internally it has a stop-chamfered bressumer and stop chamfered joists. The roof truss on the line of the bressumer has a tie beam with a groove in the soffit, and above the tie there is a king-post and seven 'V' braces. The rear aisle is single storey and has a double chamfered mullioned window of 2 lights the mullion removed. The right hand return wall of the east wing has a fire-window of 2 lights and a double chamfered mullioned window of 4 lights, two mullions removed. Above are a 2-light and 3-light mullioned window much altered. Built in to the gable of the main range is an external well shaped stack to the parlour of the eastwing. Internally this has a large fireplace with a broad chamfered surround. The house assumed it's present form by the mid C17. The centrally placed hall was flanked by two cross-wings both containing heated parlours.
