Full description:
Late C17 house to south to which is attached late C18 house attached to C19 block. Hammer-dressed stone, stone slate roof. North facing front C18 house of 3 bays. Symmetrical. Rusticated quoins, band, coped gable with stack to left hand end. 2 and a half storeys. Basement cellars have 3-light flat faced mullioned window. Doorway approached up flight of stone steps has Doric pilasters, entablature, open pediment enclosing semi-circular fanlight with Gothic glazing. Over is semi-circular arched window with moulded head, imposts and dropped keystone; sashed with Gothic glazing. To either side Venetian windows, the surrounds of which project. Moulded impost, head and dropped keystone. Sashed with Gothic glazing. Moulded cornice. Attached to right hand is 3-storey block. Band, rusticated quoins. 2 bays of large 2-light windows with plain stone surrounds which project. (Modern glazing). Left hand return wall reveals double-pile rear range with 2-span roof of earlier date. Quoins, gable stack to rear pile. Chamfered mullioned window of 2 lights to ground floor and double chamfered mullioned window of 4 lights (2 mullions removed) to 1st floor. Attached at right angles to this rear range is 2-storey late C17 house of hall-and-cross-wing plan. East face of this range has chamfered mullioned window of 2 lights, with same over. Doorway with straight lintel and chamfered surround, backs on to hearth. Double chamfered mullioned window with king mullion of 8 lights, (3 + 5). Over, chamfered mullioned window of 4 lights. West face has double chamfered mullioned window of 5 lights with 4-light chamfered window over. Other windows inserted in keeping. Doorway to right hand end has monolithic jambs, large lintel with cyma moulded cornice. Rear of 3-storey house has similar doorway. One bay of 5-light flat faced mullioned windows (each lacking 2 mullions), other bay has 3-light windows. Set between is stair window. Left hand return wall has taking-in door at 2nd floor with Venetian window over. An interesting group formerly connected with textile manufacture, prominently sited on the hillside above the canal and main road.
