Includes: No. 9 Russell Street. Office building with 5 shops. 1894. Designed by W H D Horsfall. Steel-framed with ashlar cladding and a slate roof. 4 storey, 8 bays. Ground floor has from left to right a cart entrance, a double shopfront and a single shopfront, then the office entrance and 2 further single shop fronts. All with dividing rusticated pilasters with bracket tops and fascia boards between. Most of the shops retain some of their original architectural features, but BACKHOUSES retains its curved shop windows and all its original features. Above the upper 8 bays are arranged A:B:B:B:A:B:B, with a cross casement at A and tripartite windows with a central cross casement at B, on the first and second floors. Each of these bays is divided by a pilaster rusticated on the first floor and half fluted on the second, all topped by a cornice with brackets. Above the same arrangement with a 2-light casement at A, and a tripartite window with a central 2-light casement topped with a pediment at B. Each bay is divided by a plain pilaster.
