Full description:
House of C17 origin includes No. 1 Northgate (q.v.) refronted early C19, now public house. Large dressed stone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys and attic. Fronts street. Centrally placed doorway has monolithic jambs, decorative cornice, consoles. Over is signboard set in recess, probably a single window originally. To left canted bay window with 3 windows with projecting sill to each floor. To right semi-octagonal bay window with window with projecting sill to each face. Right hand return wall is C17 with some chamfered mullioned windows of 2 lights (blocked). Attached to north is No. 1 Northgate forming extra accommodation for inn. Doorway with tie-stone jambs to left of window of one narrow light and 3-wide lights. Over to 1st floor is 9-light flat faced mullioned window. Gable stack to main range and one other at junction with No. 48 (q.v.).
