The Halifax Infirmary, designed by George Townsend Andrews, was opened to in-patients in April 1838. The main entrance to the building was in Blackwall, opposite Holy Trinity Church. As the population of Halifax grew throughout the 19th Century, the Infirmary was gradually extended but, by the late 1880s, faced with serious overcrowding and little space for further expansion, a new site was found, in Free School Lane. The old building was closed in 1896 and later demolished.
