John Fielden of Todmorden was a wealthy cotton mill owner and also a Radical MP for Oldham. With Lord Ashley, he was instrumental in achieving the `Ten Hours' Factory Act of 1847.

In this letter, John Fielden's son, Joshua, aged 17 or 18, writes to his father to report on building progress at Robinwood Mill in Todmorden. He details certain issues arising and seeks John's guidance. Joshua expresses the hope that the family will soon be gathered in Todmorden.
