John Fielden of Todmorden was a wealthy cotton mill owner and also a Radical MP for Oldham. With Lord Ashley, he was instrumental in achieving the `Ten Hours' Factory Act of 1847.
In this letter, John Fielden's second wife, Elizabeth, writes to him from New Brighton, on The Wirral, where she has had a 10 week stay, along with two of John's daughters, Ellen and Mary. John himself is heading for London, presumably in connection with his work as an MP. Elizabeth refers to John becoming owner of Centre Vale in Todmorden, and to her own bowel health!
