John Fielden of Todmorden was a wealthy cotton mill owner and also a Radical MP for Oldham. With Lord Ashley, he was instrumental in achieving the 'Ten Hours' Factory Act of 1847.
In this letter, John Fielden's daughter, Ann, writes to him in London, with references to her brothers, Sam, John and Joshua, who are all in Switzerland. She also refers to her own and her sister Mary's desire to spend their father's money on home furnishings for their 'fine house' (Centre Vale, in Todmorden). She also passes on Mary's 'enchantment' with John's speech in Parliament two days before (on the subject of the Poor Law, to which John was consistently opposed).
