The building now home to Hebden Bridge Library was originally the Sunday School for Hope Baptist Church and opened on May 7th 1873. A long-awaited extension to the premises was added in 1908. During major refurbishment work to the Library (completed in 2009) these pulleys were rediscovered and have been retained as a feature. Local residents remember that they formed part of what was, for its time, state of the art gym equipment used by the Sunday School.
