'The Gleddings' was built around 1871 by Henry Alexander Norris and was known at that time as 'Rockcliffe'. He lived there until 1884-85. John William Smithies lived there from 1891-1912.
In 1913, Sir George Fisher-Smith moved there from the neighbouring house which he had called 'The Gleddings', but which was later to be known as 'Ing Royde'. When he moved, he re-named 'Rockcliffe', giving it the name of his former home. Sir George was a director of the family wire-making business (Frederick Smith & Co.), ex-Mayor, Congregationalist Deacon, collector of pictures and a Liberal. He and his American wife lived there until his death in 1931, Lady Fisher-Smith remaining there until she died in 1938.
The building is now a Preparatory School [2003].
