The name George Street was possibly named after King Christian VII of Denmark, who travelled around Europe in 1768 under the name of Prince George. Others believe that the street was named after Sir George Savile. The road has also been known as Back Lane, Loveledge, Lovelace, and Lovelace Lane.

Some of the buildings in Silver Street, Black Swan Passage and George Street were demolished to widen George Square around 1835. The most recent buildings were added in the 1950s.
