Originally built in 1277, possibly by John de Coldeley. The Rishworth family occupied the house during the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. Richard Sunderland bought the land in 1572, and was forced to sell it to pay fines incurred for supporting the Royalist side in the Civil War. The original front was destroyed in an attack by the Commonwealth troops.

The hall was bought back by Joseph Sunderland in 1775, returning the property to the Sunderland family.

The building was restored in the mid-20th century.
