Binroyd was originally a timber-framed house, in the 16th century the exterior was clad in stone as were many other buildings at this time. Some of the plasterwork, created by Michael Wainhouse in 1670, is now in Bankfield Museum.
The house was originally owned by the Brigg family, who in 1712 sold it to Richard Sterne (Laurence Sterne's uncle). Sterne's son passed the property on to the Pulleyn family, who lived there until it was demolished in the mid-20th century.
The photographer, Hugh Percy Kendall, was a founder member of the Halifax Antiquarian Society in 1900 and a frequent contributor to their transactions. He was also a former president of the Halifax Photographic Society. He died in 1937 at the age of 62.
