Rushbearing is the ceremonial taking of rushes to the church as floorcovering for the winter that was common especially in the north west. In the 17th century, the festival expanded with the introduction of the rushcart, which became the main focus of the later processions. The Rushbearing days were generally holidays and accompanied by fairs and travelling showmen.

Describes the Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing from historical days to relatively recent revivals. Included are photographs and engravings, and newspaper quotes going back to 1855. The author makes comparisons with other Rushbearing customs in the nearby localities of Ripponden, Marsden, Whitworth and Saddleworth.
