Calvert's mills, at Wainstalls, Halifax, were used in the textile trade from 1821 to 1951, and the three mills were supplied with water from the adjacent Cold Edge Dams. To these mills a number of orphan children were brought from Liverpool in 1890 to earn their living working long hours. The nearby graveyard bears mute witness to those who died while employed there and records their ages. The author was Managing Director of the company at the time of his premature death in a car accident in 1958.
