Natural History of England - Vol II (Document ID: 100808)
Halifax section of county by county gazetteer of England.
Author: Benjamin Martin
Date: 1763
Location: Halifax
Format: Gazetteer
Document ID: 100808
Library ID: 27961637
Brief account of Halifax's geographical situation, the town's role in Elizabeth I's time, its buildings, industry and Gibbet.
In spite of the title, this source is effectively an early gazetteer, providing essentially topographical and historical information relating to specific localities. Alongside brief references to the appearance of the town and the notorious gibbet law, the Halifax entry focuses on the problematic geographical location of the town, the importance of the textile industry, and in particular the rise of the worsted (shalloon) trade, which was of relatively recent origin in the area at the time.
