Natural History of England - Vol II (Document ID: 100807)

Map of Yorkshire, divided into Ridings and Wapentakes, from Gazetteer of England.

Author: Benjamin Martin
Date: 1763
Location: Yorkshire
Format: Gazetteer
Document ID: 100807
Library ID: 27961637

Folded map insert from national gazetteer showing "Yorkshire Divided into its Ridings: and Subdivided into Wapontakes. Containing the Burough & Market Towns, Rivers, Roads &c. By Eman:Bowen Geogr. to his late Majesty." Engraved in 1762.

In spite of the title, this source is effectively an early gazetteer, providing essentially topographical and historical information relating to specific localities. Alongside brief references to the appearance of the town and the notorious gibbet law, the Halifax entry focuses on the problematic geographical location of the town, the importance of the textile industry, and in particular the rise of the worsted (shalloon) trade, which was of relatively recent origin in the area at the time.
