"The Natural History of England; or, a Description of each particular County, In regard to the curious Productions of Nature and Art. Illustrated by a Map of each County. Vol. II. [...] By Benjamin Martin. London: Printed and sold by W. Owen, near Temple-Bar, and by the Author, at his House in Fleet-Street. MDCCLXIII."
In spite of the title, this source is effectively an early gazetteer, providing essentially topographical and historical information relating to specific localities. Alongside brief references to the appearance of the town and the notorious gibbet law, the Halifax entry focuses on the problematic geographical location of the town, the importance of the textile industry, and in particular the rise of the worsted (shalloon) trade, which was of relatively recent origin in the area at the time.
