St John's Hospital was originally built as a hospital to serve Halifax Union Workhouse, opened in 1840. The hospital was known as St Luke's from 1891. A new St Luke's Hospital was built in 1901 to house the bedridden patients, this site later became the Halifax General. The hospital on Gibbet Street was then named St John's.
The building was closed in 1966 and demolished in April 1972.
