Try starting with a simple keyword
search by typing a term (e.g. "health") in the text
entry box and press "Search" see figure 2a below.
The search facility is not case sensitive and supports partial
term matches (e.g. "Rail", will find "railway"
and "Railway Station").
The keyword search facility requires that keywords are confined
to specific complete or partial terms (e.g. "Almshouse"
or "Hebden Bridge") the search engine assumes that whatever
is typed in to the text box is a literal search i.e. "Almshouse
Hebden Bridge" would look for records containing the whole
phrase "Almshouse Hebden Bridge" and is therefore unlikely
to return any matches. If you wish to search using more than one
keyword (e.g. "Mill" and "Fire") please use
the advanced
search facility, which allows the entry of up to three keywords
in three separate text boxes. See figure 2b below.
The advanced search facility also allows you to combine multiple
search elements (e.g. all monochrome photographs, dated between
1800 and 1900 containing the word "Almshouse" in the
title)
Images can have several keywords associated with them to enable
discovery from within the archive (e.g. author surname, title,
location, etc.) If you have a specific search in mind note that
there are specific search types to utilise, these are listed on
the basic
keyword search page (e.g. date
search for a specific date, location
search for a specific location.)
