He was born in Halifax on 7th February 1863 and entered London journalism at the age of 20 years. His first long story 'When Charles I was King', a historical novel, appeared in 1892 after he had joined the staff of the Leeds Mercury. His literary work included biography, political writings, Yorkshire history and archaeology, topography, regional novels and dialect verse.

Beginning in 1914, he wrote more than 100 detective stories in 20 years, some of which became best sellers in the United States. His autobiography 'Memoirs of a Spectator' (1912) recalls his early life in Halifax. He died at his home in Dorking, Surrey, in February 1935, aged 72.
