This letter consists only of the date sent (9th February 1839), the name and address to which it was being sent (Mr Samuel Fielden, Dawson Weir, Todmorden, Nr Rochdale), the name of the sender (John Fielden) and the words, `The certiorari in the indictment will be [moved] in a day or two'.
The Latin legal term certiorari probably relates to an appeal to a higher court attempting to quash an order made by JPs (magistrates).
Though we cannot be certain, it is possible that this is a reference to the case of William Greenwood, fined excessively by Todmorden magistrates for selling beer after hours on 26th December 1838, in the aftermath of the Poor Law Riots.
