This is a ticket for a ball that was held by Elland Urban District Council to raise funds for the Halifax Infirmary and the Elland, Greetland and Stainland Nursing Associations. The event took place at the Constitution Hall, Elland on Friday 25th November 1938. It included supper and dancing with music provided by A.W. Akroyd's Encore Dance Orchestra.
Prior to the formation of the National Health Service in 1948, there was no fully inclusive nationalised healthcare system. The healthcare that was available was either paid for privately by the patients themselves or by charitable donations. The Royal Halifax Infirmary was funded entirely by charitable donations and subscriptions. Fundraisers such as this one became a key source of income, allowing the hospital to deliver healthcare for local people until it was absorbed into the National Health Service.
