Designed by W Swinden Barber, the Victoria Cross was paid for by Colonel Edward Akroyd and erected in his model village of Akroydon, Halifax. Inscribed on it are the words: 'Erected as a monument of Christian reverence for the emblem of the Cross and of loyalty to our sovereign lady Queen Victoria, by Edward Akroyd, the founder of Akroydon, 1875. Fear God, Honour the King'.
