Thomas Sugden founded the Brighouse works in 1829 at Perseverance Mill (see document 102121).
Due to expansion, the company took on its present site at Mill Royd Street (Brighouse) and later expanded to other mills in Huddersfield. The Brighouse works bagged 7.5 tons (7.62 tonnes) of flour per hour.
The original mill burnt down in 1895 and a replacement was built the following year. The huge white silos have become landmarks, and can be seen from almost anywhere in Brighouse. The first silo was built in 1959 and the second added in 1963, after an extensive rebuild when another fire destroyed the mill.
In 1962 the company was bought by Allied Mills.
The company closed in October 1997, and in 2001 plans were put forward for a new swimming pool and retail outlets.
