p2: Interior showing some of the ornamental plasterwork in an upper room.
These photographs were amongst those published between June 1949 and July 1950 in 'Notable Houses of West Yorkshire', a
weekly series of articles in 'The Yorkshire Observer'. The photographs were taken by the author, John Y. Stapleton, during the above period.
Marsh Hall was originally built in 1550, with additions to the building added later. The dates over the door show that James and Mary Oates lived here in 1626. Other occupants included Captain John Hodgson around 1672 and the Deardens in 1711, among others. The property was restored in the late 20th century as a private dwelling. The hall boasts a spectacular 36-light mullioned window at the south end and intricate plasterwork.
Marsh Hall is still standing [2003] and is a Grade II* Listed Building. The following is from Calderdale Council's Listed Building description:
Dated 1626, perhaps incorporating older work. Traditional building, with single storeyed centre (now with floor inserted) and 2-storeyed cross-wings with finials to gables. Walls now rendered. Stone roof. Very large tripartite range of mullioned and transomed windows to centre with later floor inserted behind. Arched and moulded doorway with initials IOM in spandrels and date over. Wide mullioned and transomed windows to wings with some mullions missing to east. Central lean-to at rear. Interior has good original decorated plaster ceiling in west front room, a little in east room and some fragments in room above with date 1635 and initials O above IM. Ceiling of corresponding room to west said to have collapsed shortly before inspection (not seen). Some early joinery and displaced panelling etc. House now divided into 3.
