Sterne Bridge over the river Calder and the canal is between Sowerby Bridge and Copley/Salterhebble, below the Norland hillside. It takes its name from the Sterne family, who lived nearby at Wood Hall, Skircoat, and ran the Sterne Mill on the river. Laurence Sterne, the 18th century author of "Tristram Shandy" and "A Sentimental Journey", stayed here with his uncle, Richard Sterne, whilst attending Hipperholme Grammar School.
Copley Viaduct, with its 23 arches, was built in the 1850s, carrying the Sowerby Bridge, Halifax and Bradford line of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway.
