After the battle of Hastings in 1066, William the Conqueror rewarded his victorious knights by giving them estates and manors, including the Manor of Wakefield and the ancient parish of Halifax. The Manor of Wakefield was given to the Earl of Warenne, who became the first Lord of the Manor.
