Photograph from 1947 showing the back-to-back houses that were in place before development in the 1960s. Plans to replace the housing were thwarted by the gradient of the hillside and the discovery of old mine workings. In the distance can be seen the chimneys of Dean Clough Mills and the spire of Akroyd's church All Souls, Haley Hill.
Taken from a book by Edward Riley and photographer Ian D Swift in 1980, "Calderdale Then And Now", which compared old photographs with contemporary pictures of the same scene.
