The book was written to mark the occasion of Halifax County Borough completing its first hundred years from being incorporated as a borough in 1848. It consists of a number of articles reprinted from 'The Halifax Courier and Guardian' relating to Halifax during that time and showing how the town had developed and changed, dealing with the police force, education and Sunday Schools, and is illustrated by reproductions of old prints and by modern photographs. The front cover of the booklet shows the revised coat of arms of Halifax which dates from 1948, the earlier arms not being registered at the College of Heralds. The author was a journalist and antiquarian.
