This view of the smoke-enshrouded town dates from the late 19th century and illustrates clearly the origin of the name 'Devil's Cauldron' which was applied to the district prior to the Clean Air Act of 1956. In spite of the stygian gloom, all six arches of the earlier North Bridge may be seen.
