Map of Yorkshire from 1670 printed for Richard Blome in London. Includes a table of 'Divisions or parts, with ye Hundreds or wapontaks [wapentakes] in York Shire'.
The Divisions of Yorkshire are its Ridings (or Thirdings) and these were further split into Wapentakes or Hundreds. These were administrative subdivisions of a county: a Wapentake was used for areas within the Danelaw in northern England and Hundred was used in areas outside the Danelaw, particularly the counties of southern England.
Halifax lay within the Wapentake of Agbrigg & Morley. The word Wapentake is derived from the Norse 'vapnatak' meaning an assembly.
