Two photographs of Union Cross pub sign and Yard, Halifax, West Yorkshire:
p1: Rear of the Union Cross and Whewalls Yard from inside Union Cross Yard.
p2: The Union Cross Inn sign from the footpath outside no.18, Old Market.
The Union Cross was named after the old market cross which stood nearby. This is believed to be the oldest public house in Halifax, [possibly 1535]. Originally the Inn was named The Crosse Inn, but in 1557 was re-named in support of the Jacobites.
The Union Cross still has one of the largest cock fighting rings in the area and tournaments continued well after the abolition of the sport.
It is believed that Daniel Defoe and John Wesley stayed here when passing though the borough.
