Built in 1766 as a wedding present for a daughter of the Stocks family, a family who were successful with coal-mining and brewing. The family name is still commemorated in the Stocks Arms at Northowram. The house was designed in a Georgian style by John Carr of York (who also designed Somerset House in Halifax). This photo is by Jack Townsend of the Halifax Photographic Society.




Still standing 2003. Grade II Listed Building. The following is from Calderdale Council's Listed Building descriptions:




Late C18. Substantial stone house. 2 storeys. 5 sash windows with pediment over central 3. Eaves-cornice to hipped stone roof. Segmental pediment on brackets to entrance door. Earlier wing to west of 2 lower storeys with 5-light mullioned window above and modern garage door etc below. East return of 3 windows now with iron staircase. Plain rear with arched stair window and large mullioned window each side.
