Lithograph of Halifax showing the town from Beacon Hill on the eastern side of the Hebble valley.
It shows the town at an early stage of industrialisation: mills and chimneys are visible, boats ply the Hebble navigation, cattle graze in the fields by the river in between the Minster and the mill complexes. Probably the scene is early to mid-19th century - the Halifax Branch Canal was opened in 1828; the Square Congregational Chapel can be seen to the left of the Minster, but no sign of the tall spire of the Square Congregational Church, which was completed by 1857.
The print has been badly cropped from its surround and has no text on the front. However, in manuscript on the back of the mount is information that presumably was part of the front: " Drawn from Nature and on Stone by Henry Burn. Published by W. Birtwhistle, Bookseller, Halifax, April 1847. Printed by C.E. Cheffins [?], London. To the Right Honourable Lord Viscount Morpeth, M.P. This view of Halifax, Taken from Beacon Hill Is with permission most respectfully dedicated by his Lordship's obliged and obedt. Humble servant Henry Burn."
