The Assembly and Concert Rooms were built in 1828, by subscription, under the superintendence of Mr John Oates.
The Assembly and Concert Rooms (then known as the "The New Rooms") on Harrison Road were the first home of The Halifax Literary and Philosophical Society in 1830. It housed the subscription library and the Society's museum. However, the Society quickly outgrew this building and built and leased new premises in 1836. The "The New Rooms" are often confused with the newer Assembly Rooms which the Halifax Literary and Philosophical Society expanded into as these were also located on Harrison Road. The Assembly and Concert Rooms were demolished in 1894 to make way for the police and court buildings currently standing empty on Harrison Road (Nov 2018).
