Road map by Ogilby & Bowen published in 1720 in "Britannia Depicta or Ogilby Improv'd; Being a correct Copy of Mr. Ogilby's Actual Survey of all ye Direct & Principal Cross Roads in England and Wales". Ogilby was the first to survey the roads of England and Wales and his original strip maps were published in 1675.
This road map depicts the journey from Barnsley to Skipton, via Halifax. The script also includes various accounts: the legend of the origin of the name of Halifax from 'Holy Hair', a story of the murder of a virgin by a clergyman; details of the gibbet and its use; details of famous locals Johannes de Sacro Bosco (author of "The Treatise de Sphera" and no longer thought to be a local personality), Dr. John Tillotson (Archbishop of Canterbury), Will Rokeby (Archbishop of Dublin); as well as details of local philanthropists and benefactors who provided for a hospital, workhouse, and salaries for Ministers.
