This photograph shows the unveiling, in 1904, of the Soldiers' Memorial, a war memorial to 73 soldiers who died in the Boer War in South Africa. The memorial is an elaborate stone structure with bronze tablets and a circular upper stage of polished granite supporting a standing bronze figure of a soldier.

Reports of the unveiling event noted that the Union Jack got stuck, leaving only the soldier's head and shoulders visible. On close inspection, this can be seen in the photo.

The memorial is a grade II listed monument.
