Photograph of what is believed to be a Roman Road at Blackstone Edge, South Pennines.

Author: Unknown
Date: not dated
Location: Blackstone Edge

Library ID: 34562423

It is believed the road was built before the packhorse road system, but doubt remains as to whether it is old enough to be Roman.
It forms the route between Ripponden and Littleborough over Blackstone Edge, a 1549 ft ridge summit in the South Pennines. The area was recorded in 1291 as Blacksteynegge.

Now forms part of the Pennine Way long distance footpath.
