Refund policy

If you should choose to cancel your membership within the allotted 15 days, refund of the initial payment will be made by BACS to the account from which the payment was made. The refund will take no longer than 10 working days. To apply for a refund email:

Frequently asked questions

Q What is my initial payment for on my direct debit membership?

This one off initial payment includes your joining fee currently £10, plus current month’s gym membership fees. If you join after the 10th of the month it also includes your next month’s membership fee. This is because of direct debit scheme deadlines.

Q When will my direct debit be taken from my bank?

It will be taken on or just after the 1st of each month. Unfortunately we are unable to offer a different payment date at this time.

Q I need to change my bank details for my direct debit?

Please contact our lifestyles team on: 01422 393270, or call into one of our swimming pools / fitness centres to complete a new direct debit mandate.

Q What happens if I cancel my direct debit?

If you choose to cancel before the end of your committed period you will be invoiced for the balance. If you have joined up for a 12 month committed membership you must pay your initial payment plus 11 monthly direct debits. After your committed period has finished, your membership will continue to run on a month by month basis until cancelled.

Q How do I cancel my membership / refunds

If you have joined online, you can cancel your membership within the first 15 days from the purchase date, providing you have not entered or used our sites.

After this period, if you have joined up for a 12 month committed membership you cannot cancel your membership until the full committed period has run out (Please refer to your terms and conditions for exclusions to this rule). Q Would I be allowed to cancel before the end of my committed period?

Q Would I be allowed to freeze my membership if I could not use the gym on medical grounds?

Yes, there are circumstances where we would consider freezing your membership. Please refer to your terms and conditions

Q What membership options do you offer?

Online we offer our adult 12 month committed membership and our adult annual membership, including passport to leisure and corporate memberships.

Other memberships including 12 month committed ‘Family’, ‘Junior Bronze’, 'Junior Silver' and 'Junior Gold’ are available at our swimming pools / fitness centres

Q How much is the membership?

For pricing information see the individual membership options: Adult, Corporate, Family and Junior.

Q How long am I tied in for?

12 months on all adult memberships unless otherwise specified. For Juniors (under 16) there is no 'tied in' period.

Q Do I get a membership card when I sign up?

Yes. When you have signed up you will be expected to visit reception on your first visit to pick up your membership card and evidence your passport to leisure or corporate membership status.

Q Can I try before I sign up?

You are welcome to try any of our services prior to committing to a membership. We offer a pay and play option for all of our activities. For activities and prices see: Sports and fitness.

Q Do you have personal trainers?

Yes. We have personal trainers operating at Brighouse and Sowerby Bridge Pool Fitness Centres.

Q How much do personal trainers cost?

Please visit Brighouse and Sowerby Bridge Fitness Centres and discuss the rates with individual Personal Trainers.

Terms and Conditions for joining online

If you are signing up as a corporate or Passport to Leisure member, you will be asked to evidence your corporate membership status / Passport to Leisure eligibility. Failure to produce evidence within 30 days will result in your membership rate changing to the standard rate.

Help with joining online

To join online you need:

  • an email address so you can be sent your online booking details, payment and booking confirmations as well as important membership information;
  • a valid UK bank account that accepts a direct debit arrangement if you wish to take out a direct debit membership. Memberships are valid for the account holder only;
  • a credit or debit card may be required to make an up-front payment.

On completion of the online joining process you will be sent two emails; one will welcome you to Active Lifestyles and detail how to get started, the other will detail your payment information.

Help with booking activities and classes

There are 3 ways to book a class or activity:

  1. Online at;
  2. By phoning any Calderdale leisure facility during Reception opening hours;
  3. In person at any Calderdale leisure facility during opening hours.

Register to use online booking

You will need your member ID and password.

  • Active Lifestyles member
    Email your full name, email address you wish to use and post code to and your details will be confirmed to you. This is necessary so that we can make sure your membership discounts are applied to your bookings correctly. Once you have received your details you do not need to do this again
  • Non-member who wants to use the facilities on an occasional basis
    Go to Join@Home and register your details as a casual user. Once you have finished registering your details the system will email you your details. Once you have received your login details you do not need to do this again.

    If you are a Passport to Leisure card holder you will not receive this discount until you have first been into site with your member ID and Passport to Leisure card so that staff can record your Passport to Leisure details.

  • Non-member thinking of joining or wanting to join

    Go to the memberships page and you will be taken through all the most popular membership options. Whilst there you can become a member, complete all your paperwork online and start booking.

    Once you have finished registering your details the system will email you your details. Once you have received your login details you do not need to do this again

Step-by-step guide to making a booking


  • Bookings can only be made up to a maximum of 8 days in advance;
  • Block bookings cannot be made;
  • A very small number of classes and activities cannot be booked in advance, including specialist courses / lessons.
  1. 1.Go to (making the site one of your favourites will help make future bookings easier and faster).
  2. Enter your Member ID and password.
  3. Go to 'Edit my details' to make sure that your details are correct and that we have your current details. In particular, please make sure your email address is correct.
  4. You can change your password to a more memorable one via the 'My Details' section. Characters can be alpha or numeric.
  5. Select the centre of your choice and select your required activity and the preferred time and date
  6. Confirm your booking. You will then receive your booking confirmation via email. If any due payment is not paid then the booking cannot be held.

By phone or in person

You can visit any Calderdale Leisure Facility to make a booking or to become a member. Our helpful and friendly staff will be able to take you through the process and answer any questions you might have.

Bikeability course booking

As part of the online booking system's security it will automatically lock your account after 3 incorrect attempts to login. To unlock your account email from your registered email address, quoting your member ID, name and postcode and we will unlock your account and reconfirm your details to you

You can alter a booking online, by telephone or in person at the site the booking is at.

If altering a booking online first log into your account and go to 'Manage Bookings'. This will then show you which options are available (to the right of each booking). Note: alterations to bookings are subject to terms and conditions. If the option you require is not available contact the facility for assistance.

You can cancel a booking online, by telephone or in person at the site the booking was to take place at. Note: you will not be refunded at the time of cancelling unless you visit your local centre and meet the refund criteria. Cancellations can be made online up until start time. Notification is appreciated as many sessions are in high demand with people waiting for places.

For a reminder of your password select the 'Forgotten your Password' option on the Online Booking page and a reminder will be sent to your registered email address. For a reminder of which email address you have registered or your Member ID, email quoting your name and full address, or contact one of our sites for confirmation.

Payments by card online are free. Payments made by cash or cheque at site are free.

Alternatively you might wish to consider an Active Lifestyles membership as many of our members making substantial savings this way as a large number of our classes and activities are included.
