Calderdale Family History Society - Following the Drum

During the 18th & 19th centuries many men joined the army to wear the famous “red coat” often to “…. lead more happy lives, by getting rid of brats and wives” although ironically army regulations did allow for some families to live in barracks.

Calderdale Heritage Walks: Dobroyd Castle

This afternoon walk goes to, around and inside the striking ‘Brass Castle’, by kind permission of the owners. It was built above Todmorden by John Fielden in 1869. It includes the house, walled garden and stable block with details of their history and the family.
