Play areas

The Council currently provides, manages and maintains 119 equipped play areas throughout Calderdale. The range of play areas varies from traditional playgrounds to new adventure play areas, Multi-use games areas (MUGAs) and skateparks. The facilities at each play area cater for a wide range of children of all ages and abilities.

Fixed play facilities provide outdoor activities for children to use and enjoy in their local area. Playing outside is a fundamental part of helping children learn new skills, explore their boundaries and develop new experiences to learn and grow from.

The locations of Calderdale play areas can now be viewed through Calderdale maps online.

Maintenance of play areas

Each play area is visited regularly by playground inspectors to check the safety and operation of the equipment. This is in addition to a full annual inspection and annual risk assessment.

Minor maintenance work is carried out at the time of the inspection. More major work is assigned to a dedicated play area maintenance team, who complete repairs according to priority.
