19th Century British Newspapers

This site is free to access from all libraries and also from home, using your Calderdale library card. Several newspapers, notably the Leeds Mercury, specifically cover the Calderdale area. Local reports can also be found by searching across all publications.


The Library Edition of this resource is available free of charge from all Calderdale libraries. Content highlights include:

  • Census information;
  • England and Wales birth, marriage and death indexes;
  • parish registers of the West Riding of Yorkshire;
  • military records;
  • Poor Law records.

British Newspaper Archive

An online digital archive, allowing you to explore over 200 years of British and Irish history. This is through the medium of historical newspapers. There is a wide range of local and national newspapers available, some of which cover Yorkshire. This is free to use in a number of libraries.

Find My Past

Find My Past is free to use in the Central Reference Library (Halifax), or in Todmorden Library (Wednesday only). Find My Past includes a wide range of databases of use to family and local historians. Two customers can log in to the site at any one time. This is a range of short local history articles, illuminating the heritage of the area. They put key places, events and people into context.

Weaver to Web: online visual archive of Calderdale history

This archive of Calderdale history gives access to over 23,000 images, accompanied by supporting historical information. It is largely based on the collections in Calderdale Central Reference Library, where it continues to be maintained and added to. The digitised Halifax Weekly Courier for 1914 -18 can also be found on this site.
