Ephemera, Council Minutes and other local studies resources

A wide range of ephemera, 'grey literature', Council information and pamphlet material is available in the Central Reference Library.

Handbills

A handbill is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as a "printed notice or advertisement on a single page, intended to be delivered or circulated by hand. Sometimes applied to a small bill to be posted on walls, etc."

Handbills offer a fascinating insight into life in the past, featuring highs (theatre performances) and lows (the last words of a condemned man).

The Central Reference Library in Halifax  has a collection of over 150 handbills, some dating back to the 18th Century.  Enter 'Handbill' as a 'quick search' term in the Online library catalogue
